The Waiting Game with a Whistle (Wait for Event)

Sometimes you don’t want to wait for a fixed clock timer like 3 days. You want to wait until the user actually does something! For example:
“Wait until the user uploads their avatar. As soon as they upload it, high-five them! But if they don’t upload it within 3 days, blow the referee whistle and send them a gentle reminder.”
That’s the magic of The Waiting Game with a Whistle!

The Fast Pass vs The Whistle

When a traveler reaches this block, two different doors appear:
  1. The Fast Pass Door (Green Line): If the user uploads their avatar within 5 minutes, they don’t have to wait 3 days! They get an immediate fast pass through the green door.
  2. The Whistle Door (Gray Line): If the 3 days tick away and they still haven’t uploaded an avatar, the whistle blows! They travel down the gray door so you can send them a polite nudge.

Why Is This Much Smarter?

  • Fast users get an instant high-five without being made to wait around for days.
  • Busy users only get reminded when they actually forget to do the task!

Real Life Example: Email Verification Checker

  1. The Bell Rings: user.signup
  2. Action: Send the initial verification link.
  3. The Waiting Game: Wait for email.verified with a whistle timer of 24 hours.
  4. The Doors:
    • Verified within 24 hours: Hand them the “Verified Member” club badge and send the starter tutorial!
    • Whistle blows after 24 hours: Send a quick reminder: “Hey! Click the verification link in your inbox to unlock your account.”
