Open and Click Tracking

Mailofly allows you to track email open rates and link clicks automatically. To maintain your sender reputation and brand integrity, Mailofly supports custom tracking domains so that all links in your emails point to your domain (e.g. links.yourdomain.com) instead of a third-party tracking domain.

How Tracking Works

  1. Open Tracking: Mailofly inserts an invisible 1x1 pixel image into the HTML body of your email. When the recipient’s mail client loads the image, an email.opened event is recorded.
  2. Click Tracking: URLs inside your email body are rewritten with unique tracking redirects. When a user clicks a link, the click is logged (email.clicked) and the recipient is immediately redirected to the destination URL.

Setting Up a Custom Tracking Domain

To enable custom tracking links:
  1. In the Mailofly dashboard, open Domains → select your domain.
  2. Under Tracking Settings, enable Custom Tracking Subdomain.
  3. Choose a subdomain (commonly links, click, or trk).
  4. Add the following CNAME record at your DNS provider:
  1. Once verified, all links in your emails will automatically be branded:

Privacy & Best Practices

  • Apple Mail Privacy Protection (MPP): Apple Mail pre-fetches images in the background, which can record immediate opens. Mailofly tags MPP opens separately in analytics.
  • Plaintext Emails: If you send pure plaintext emails with no HTML, open tracking pixels cannot be loaded, though link click tracking remains functional if URL rewriting is enabled.
