# Business Mailboxes Overview

> Hosted custom-domain inboxes (user@yourdomain.com) with storage quotas, JMAP Webmail, and native IMAP/SMTP client support.

# Business Mailboxes

**Mailofly Business Mailboxes** gives your organization custom-branded email inboxes (e.g. `alex@yourdomain.com`, `support@yourdomain.com`) hosted directly on your verified domains—without the expensive per-seat pricing of legacy office suites.

While transactional APIs send outbound notifications, **Business Mailboxes** provide actual user inboxes where employees and teams can receive, read, search, organize, and reply to incoming mail.

## Why Mailofly Mailboxes?

Traditional email workspace providers (such as Google Workspace and Microsoft 365) charge **$6 to $18+ per user per month**. For growing startups, development agencies, and fast-scaling teams with 10–50+ mailboxes, this creates an unnecessary recurring cost.

Mailofly changes this model:

| Feature | Legacy Providers (Google / M365) | Mailofly Business Mailboxes |
| - | - | - |
| **Pricing Model** | Expensive per-seat recurring fee ($6–$18/user/mo) | Included with your Mailofly organization plan |
| **Domain Setup** | Isolated setup per domain | Create mailboxes instantly on any verified domain |
| **Webmail Access** | Web interface | Dedicated fast JMAP Webmail client ([mail.mailofly.com](https://mail.mailofly.com)) |
| **Desktop & Mobile Apps** | Supported | Universal IMAP (Port 993) & SMTP (Port 587/465) sync |
| **Storage Quotas** | Fixed tier pools | Custom per-mailbox storage quotas (500MB to 50GB+) |
| **Architecture** | Proprietary closed ecosystem | High-performance Rust-based Stalwart engine + Cloudflare R2 / S3 |
| **Developer API & MCP** | Complex enterprise OAuth scopes | Unified REST API, dashboard controls, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) |

## Technical Architecture

Mailofly Mailboxes are engineered for extreme speed, high reliability, and low storage overhead:

1. **Rust-Powered Mail Core**: Driven by [Stalwart Mail Server](https://github.com/stalwartlabs/stalwart), a state-of-the-art mail server written in Rust offering memory safety, sub-millisecond execution, and RFC compliance.
2. **Dynamic SQL Directory**: Authenticates dynamically against Supabase PostgreSQL views (`public.stalwart_accounts` and `public.stalwart_emails`). When an admin creates or resets a mailbox in the dashboard, it is **instantly live** on the mail server with zero background synchronization delay.
3. **Infinite S3 / R2 Blob Storage**: Message MIME bodies and attachments are streamed directly into cost-effective object storage (Cloudflare R2 / AWS S3 at \~\$0.015/GB/mo), keeping container instances lightweight and durable.
4. **Embedded RocksDB Indexing**: Full-text message indexing and cryptographic TLS session caches are stored locally on persistent NVMe volumes for instantaneous inbox search.
5. **Modern JMAP Protocol (RFC 8620, RFC 8621)**: Consumed by our Next.js webmail application for ultra-responsive folder navigation, reduced network bandwidth, and efficient battery usage on mobile devices.
